This guide goes over creating, updating, and managing buyer personas to enhance campaign targeting. It explains two methods: AI Optimized Personas, which leverage data-driven insights for audience segmentation, and Manual Personas, allowing full customization of attributes. The guide also covers associating personas with Groups, filtering by criteria, and refining your strategy based on evolving audience needs.
In today’s competitive market, understanding your audience is key. A buyer persona is a detailed profile of your ideal customer, encompassing their demographics, behaviors, preferences, and pain points. Think of it as creating a character that embodies your target audience. Buyer personas help you empathize with your audience and tailor your marketing efforts to resonate with them. This results in better communication, higher engagement, and improved conversions.
On Grower, creating buyer personas is simple. You can either define them manually or leverage Grower’s AI Persona Generation. The AI uses your campaign data, products, market trends, and target regions to craft a persona that aligns perfectly with your marketing goals. Each persona is unique to a Campaign Group, and you can associate unlimited personas with a single Campaign Group.
Creating A Buyer Persona
To create a buyer persona, navigate to the Personas tab under your Campaign Group. If there are no existing personas, you’ll see a “Create New Buyer Persona” button. If personas already exist, an additional “Add Buyer Persona” button will also be available. Clicking on either button will initiate the persona creation process.
Next, choose between creating an AI-Optimized Persona or a Manual Persona. Given that each persona is designed specifically for a particular campaign group, it's essential to consider whether a persona created for a different campaign group could also be applicable here.
Manual Buyer Persona Creation (Not Recommended)
To add an Manual Persona, go to the Personas tab within your Campaign Group and click either "Create New Buyer Persona" or "Add Buyer Persona" depending on whether any personas already exist. From here, select the "Manual Persona" option. This approach gives you full control over defining every attribute, allowing you to tailor the persona to your specific needs and objectives.
Once you've completed creating your persona, it will be added to your buyer personas list. Here, you'll have convenient access to view all the details of your personas, including their attributes and characteristics. Additionally, you'll have the flexibility to edit or delete personas as needed, ensuring that your buyer personas list remains up-to-date and reflective of your evolving marketing strategies.
If you opt to create your persona manually, you will not be able to leverage Grower’s AI to optimize your persona and refine it.
AI Optimized Buyer Persona (Recommended)
To add an AI-Optimized Persona, go to the Personas tab within your Campaign Group and click either "Create New Buyer Persona" or "Add Buyer Persona" depending on whether any personas already exist. In the popup, select the "AI-Optimized Persona" option.
You will be prompted to fill in several required fields which are critical for the AI engine to generate an accurate and effective persona. The more information you supply about your audience, the more precise and actionable the AI-generated persona will be. Once all fields are completed, click "Create".
Buyer Persona Card
On the Grower platform, each persona card contains various fields to help you build a comprehensive profile. Here’s a simple guide to understanding and utilizing these fields.

Editing A Buyer Persona
To edit a buyer persona, you can either click on the edit icon directly on the persona card or open the persona by clicking on the “View Persona Details” button and then clicking the “Edit Persona” button.
If the persona was AI-generated, any edits you make will override the AI’s original suggestions, giving you the flexibility to refine the persona to meet your specific marketing objectives.
If you want to compare your edits with the original AI-generated persona, you can use the "Preview Original" option. This allows you to view the AI's version and decide whether to restore it or continue with your customized changes.
If at any point you want to revert the persona to its original AI-generated form, you can click on "Restore Original." Alternatively, if you wish to abandon your current edits without saving, select "Discard Changes." This ensures you always have the option to maintain or revert changes based on your evolving requirements.
If the persona is linked to a Group and you make changes to it, those updates will automatically reflect within the group where the persona is being used. This ensures consistency across Campaign Groups and Groups, saving you the effort of updating the persona in multiple locations.
Deleting A Buyer Persona
To delete a buyer persona, navigate to the Personas tab under your Campaign Group. Locate the persona you wish to delete and click on the delete icon on the persona card. A confirmation popup will appear to ensure that you truly want to proceed with the deletion.
Once a persona is deleted, it is permanently removed from the Campaign Group. If the persona is linked to a Group, it will also be automatically deleted from that Group.
Be cautious when deleting a persona, as this action cannot be undone. If the persona is crucial to ongoing or planned campaigns, ensure that you’ve reviewed it before proceeding with the deletion.
Linking Personas Between Groups & Campaign Groups
When you create a persona within a Group, it will automatically appear in the Personas tab of the parent Campaign Group. Additionally, personas linked to a Group will display the Group Name as a Soft Tag on the persona card. This tag provides instant clarity on which Group the persona is associated with, ensuring you can quickly identify and manage linked personas. For example, a persona linked to a Group named "E-Commerce Q1" will have "E-Commerce Q1" listed in its Soft Tags.
If you edit or delete a persona linked to a Group, the changes will automatically reflect in both the Group and the Campaign Group. This ensures consistency across all linked entities. For details, refer to the Editing A Buyer Persona and Deleting A Buyer Persona sections respectively.
To learn more about creating and managing personas at the Group level, consult the Group Personas Guide. This guide provides further insights into working with personas and other Group components.
